One of the largest retail electric providers in Texas, TXU Energy provides electricity and energy services to over two million residential and commercial customers across the state. TXU offers fixed rate plans, prepaid plans, plans with free electricity on nights and/or weekends, renewable energy plans, and innovative energy saving services.
Our Take On TXU Energy
TXU Energy is one of the oldest REP operating in Texas, and their size is a testament to their ability to offer innovative plans and quality customer service. TXU Energy recently made national news with the launching of innovative products like free electricity on evenings, and a renewable energy plan backed by 100% solar energy. TXU Energy also participates in the community: TXU's Solar Academy teaches students about renewable energy, and the company even partners with schools to provide a free solar-array for educational purposes.
Budget-minded customers should take note, however, of the fact that plans offering "free" electricity might charge relatively high rates for power consumed out of the "free" hours.
About TXU Energy
TXU Energy's origins lie in the history of the electricity industry in Texas itself. The Dallas Electric Lighting Company was founded in 1882, and brought electric light to communities in northern Texas. In 1912, the Texas Power & Light Company (TP&L) consolidates 13 electric companies (including the Dallas Electric Lighting Company) into one. This company became part of the Texas Utilities Company in 1945, which served communities in the Dallas & Fort Worth areas, as well as the areas west of Abilene. In 1993 the company expanded operations to eastern Texas with the acquisition of the Southwestern Electric Service Company. In 1999 the company rebranded as TXU Corporation. At this time the company was the largest provider of electricity and natural gas in the state of Texas.
Deregulation of the Texas electricity industry in 2002 meant that TXU Corporation had to split its various activities into separate companies. TXU Energy started as a Texas retail electricity provider in at this time. In 2007 its parent company, TXU Corporation, was bought by private equity firms KKR, TPG Capital, and Goldman Sachs Capital Partners. The company was reorganized as Energy Future Holdings Corp. (EFH), with Oncor as its electric distribution business, TXU Energy as its retail electricity business, and Luminant as its electric generation business.
In April, 2014, Energy Future Holdings and certain of its subsidiaries, including TXU Energy, filed for Chapter 11 reorganization. This was confirmed by the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware in December, 2015.

We rate TXU Energy for customer service.
TXU Energy has an A+ rating from the BBB (as of January, 2016), based on the length of time it has been in business, and its responsiveness to any complaints filed against it. While at the time of writing it had the highest number of complaints filed to the Texas Public Utilities Commission (see listing here), being one of the largest REP in Texas its complaint:size ratio is actually quite low.
As satisfied customers tend not to take the time to make their opinions known, online customer reviews of TXU Energy tend to be mostly negative, with most online reviews related to billing issues. However, TXU Energy appears to be responsive towards customer concerns.

Description of Plan Types
Fixed rate plans
With a fixed rate, price (in ¢/kWh) does not change over the whole period of the contract. Once the contract is finished, unless you renew it or terminate it, it will automatically switch to a variable rate. For more information about what a fixed rate is: /energy-markets/fixed-rate-energy-offers
Customers report that they appreciate savings on fixed rate electricity plans from TXU Energy. Fixed rate plans can often be a good deal if you are able to lock in a good rate at the right time of year. In particular, consumers who are able to adjust their consumption habits to take advantage of lower rates at night or in the morning may find TXU's "Free Nights" and "Free Mornings and Evenings" plans to be a good deal.
Electricity customers should opt for fixed rate contracts of 12 months or more. Electricity prices per kilowatt-hour fluctuate throughout the year, and you may actually lose money by not being able to take advantage of prices when they are low. However, because electricity prices tend to increase over time, locking in fixed rates for longer periods may prove advantageous and deliver savings.
Variable rate plans
A variable rate is a rate whose price (in ¢/kWh) varies each month. A variable can be at the discretion of the supplier, or the supplier can give rules on the variability of their rate. For more information about what a variable rate is: /energy-markets/variable-rate-plans-for-electricity-and-gas
With/without Base Charges
TXU Energy applies some base charges to their plans, which means your electricity bill will never be zero.
Green Energy Plans
TXU Energy does offer 100% green energy plans. The 9% renewable content included in their standard plans is below the state average of 10.7%.
